The fort was built in 1548 by the Medici, in defence of the numerous attacks by pirates. Its interior is made up of large terraces in the structure with many stairs and subways. The walls are huge and encircle the entire centre of Portoferraio old. Through its important strategic position you can observe all the surrounding territory. There are many doors in Forte, but the main open to the public is in Via Guerrazzi.
